Couple’s Counselling

The reason why couples counselling can help is that the Counsellor acts as an independent, impartial observer of the situation.

As the Counsellor listens to both individuals point of view this ensures each person actively listens to the other and improves calm communication.

I use a Solution Focused approach, which, once the past issues have been discussed, looks at the changes that need to happen in the relationship dynamic to create a happier preferred future.

How many sessions would I need?

This depends on many factors and the how far back the presenting issues extend. Most people begin to find some relief and positive change within the first 4 sessions of meeting on a weekly basis. By the end of the first session we would be in a position to decide how many sessions would be required in order to complete the work safely and effectively.

For issues of childhood or sexual abuse I would use a more psychodynamic approach, which would be upwards of 12 sessions.

For the majority of clients presenting with Life Events, Couples Counselling, Anxiety and Bereavement it would normally be between 6 – 12 sessions.

Ultimately; counselling cannot immediately change someone’s situation, but it can help to change the way we think about it and therefore reduce anxiety. Once we get into a calm space we can explore choices that help us become happier.
