Mindfulness based CBT

In a “nutshell”, Mindfulness teaches us how to bring our “logical mind” into the present moment by focusing on our breathing and the sensations in the body.

Once the logical mind is in the present moment our negative past and future thoughts, which keep us stressed, have much less impact on us.

Sometimes, perhaps for the first time in their life, people truly experience what it is like to feel totally calm, peaceful, happy and joyful.

Once experienced and practiced this therapy can provide a very useful tool to help manage stress, anxiety or depression.

How many sessions would I need?

This depends on many factors and the how far back the presenting issues extend. Most people begin to find some relief and positive change within the first 4 sessions of meeting on a weekly basis. By the end of the first session we would be in a position to decide how many sessions would be required in order to complete the work safely and effectively.

For issues of childhood or sexual abuse I would use a more psychodynamic approach, which would be upwards of 12 sessions.

For the majority of clients presenting with Life Events, Couples Counselling, Anxiety and Bereavement it would normally be between 6 – 12 sessions.

Ultimately; counselling cannot immediately change someone’s situation, but it can help to change the way we think about it and therefore reduce anxiety. Once we get into a calm space we can explore choices that help us become happier.
